Scone is known as the ‘Horse Capital of Australia’ and is approximately a four hour drive north from Sydney. It has a population of around 5,500 people and is encircled by mountains, valleys, farmland and creeks.
Scone has a thriving economic base centred around the equine and agricultural industries. One of the most famous breeding studs in the area is Darley. This stud is owned by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who is better known as the ruler of Dubai and Vice-President of the United Arab Emirates.
James Packer is also a familiar name in the region, with the Ellerston station, which was owned by the late media mogul Kerry Packer, now run by his family. The cattle and sheep station boasts some of Australia’s best polo fields as well as a private and exclusive Greg Norman-designed golf course that is only open to members and select guests.
If you’re not a guest of the Packer’s, don’t fear as there’s plenty of other activities to keep you occupied including a five kilometre signposted tourist walk, swimming at the Washpools in Towarri National Park, fishing at Lake Glenbawn or hiking in the nearby
Barrington Tops!
There are accommodation options and
restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets. If you’re visiting during the Scone and Upper Hunter Horse Festival (April/May), be sure to book early.
