Pokolbin is undoubtedly most famous as one of Australia’s best wine producing regions. The area is famed for its Semillon and Shiraz grapes and wine enthusiasts from around the world flock here to sample wine, indulge in fine food and relax in the tranquil surrounds of Hunter Valley Wine Country.
There are more than 140 vineyards and
wineries in Pokolbin ranging from small, boutique, family-run estates to large recognised wine brands. You can easily spend a week or more making your way through the picturesque country roads stoping to sample the delectable drops, taste some homemade produce and being pampered at one of the world-class day spas or resorts.
Pokolbin is often referred to as Hunter Valley Wine Country and is home to some of the state’s best restaurants. There are a number of cooking classes available for food-lovers and for those more partial to liquid – there are lots of wine appreciation classes.
Most cellar doors offer complimentary wine tastings and there are lots of fun ways to get from one winery to the next including via horse and cart!
There is plenty of
accommodation in the vineyards from brand-name hotels to small bed and breakfasts. Many places stipulate a two-night minimum booking on the weekends, and accommodation can fill up fast if there is a major band or artist performing at one of the outdoor amphitheatres.
Be sure to visit some of the boutique vineyards where the service is more personal and staff take the time to talk to you about the winemaking process and the region in general. Often cellar door staff can provide you with local recommendations or tips that can truly make your stay a memorable one.
