Includes the previous Kooragang and Hexham Swamp Nature Reserves and Stockton Sandspit and has created the largest estuary wetland in New South Wales. Migratory shorebirds from the northern hemisphere gather here.
Bird watching is best from close to Stockton Bridge. The Kooragan Wetlands is a rehabilitation project on Ash Island with a board walk through the mangroves.
Kooragang wetlands and Ash Island is 9km north west of Newcastle and signposted off the Pacific Highway. Stockton Sandspit is 4km north of Newcastle under the Stockton Bridge.
