Cessnock is approximately 50 kilometres west of
Newcastle and is positioned at the gateway to Hunter Valley Wine Country with a population of around 46,000. Wine tourism and mining are two of the key economic drivers for the city. While more than 140 of Australia’s best wineries and vineyards are just moments away, Cessnock has lots of other great things to offer including world-class restaurants, accommodation, gold courses and arts and crafts galleries.
Cessnock is home to a well-regarded Regional Art Gallery and thanks to its proximity to the vineyards, a great range of national and international events are easily accessible including concerts, food and wine shows and seasonal festivals.
The area has a rich sporting history and some of Australia’s best known sportspeople hail from the region. Rugby League players Andrew and Mathew Johns and golf legend Jack Newton were all born in Cessnock.
The area is serviced by large supermarket chains, retail outlets and fast food restaurants. There is also a large performing arts centre, a cinema complex and a number of aquatic centres.
While accommodation options in the heart of the vineyards can be expensive, Cessnock offers some comparatively cheaper accommodation options from which to explore the Hunter’s famous
wineries.
